Police have warned motorists of possible traffic congestion in several parts of Colombo due to the 152nd annual Vel Festival procession of the New Kathiresan Kovils in Pettah and Bambalapitiya.

The silver chariot procession will begin from the Kathiresan Kovil on Sea Street, Pettah, at 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, and is expected to reach the New Kathiresan Kovil in Bambalapitiya by 8.30 p.m.

The procession will travel through Sea Street, Gas Works Junction, Main Street, Khan Clock Tower, YMBA Junction, Leyden Bastian Road, York Street, Baron Jayatilaka Mawatha, Janadhipathi Mawatha, Galle Face and Galle Road before reaching Bambalapitiya.

According to Police, the procession is expected to travel along Galle Road through Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya between 5.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m., before reaching the Old Kathiresan Kovil at around 7.00 p.m. and the New Kathiresan Kovil at around 8.30 p.m.

The return procession will take place on Friday, July 31, beginning from the New Kathiresan Kovil in Bambalapitiya at 8.00 a.m. and proceeding towards the Kathiresan Kovil on Sea Street, Pettah. It is expected to conclude at around 12.30 am.

Police said traffic congestion could occur along the procession routes during these periods and urged motorists and the public to use alternative routes wherever possible. (Newswire)
