MP Archchuna issues clarification after viral video of altercation while holding firearm

A video circulating on social media shows Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archchuna involved in an altercation with a group of individuals during a dispute in Periyavilaan, Jaffna, over a contested piece of land.

The incident is linked to an ongoing case before a magistrate’s court regarding ownership of the land, with both the MP and another party, including a woman, claiming rights over the property.

On the 25th, the MP was reportedly engaged in cleaning work on what he described as his ancestral land when a group of two men and five women arrived at the location. A verbal dispute then broke out after the group objected to the activity and asserted ownership over parts of the land.

During the confrontation, the MP was seen holding a firearm as tensions escalated between the parties.

Following the circulation of the video, MP Archchuna, appearing in a live Facebook video, said that the group had entered the property and disrupted his work, and that stones were allegedly thrown at him during the incident.

He stated that, due to what he described as a threat to his safety, he used his personal firearm, which he said was provided by the defence ministry, to defend himself and bring the situation under control. He added that he had no intention of harming anyone. (NewsWire)
