Cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers dies aged 89

Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history, has died at the age of 89, West Indies Cricket confirmed on Friday.

The Barbadian icon represented the West Indies from 1954 to 1974, scoring 8,032 Test runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets in 93 Tests. He also held the world record for the highest individual Test score with an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 until it was surpassed by Brian Lara in 1994.

Sobers, who was knighted in 1975 and later became a National Hero of Barbados, is also remembered as the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket. Tributes have begun pouring in from across the cricketing world. (Newswire)
