Suspect who shot policeman in Katunayake arrested

The suspect accused of shooting a police officer in Katunayake on Tuesday afternoon has been arrested, Police said.
According to Police, the suspect was taken into custody in the Devolapola area of Minuwangoda.
Earlier, a police officer was injured in a shooting in the Dewamottawa area of Katunayake and admitted to the Negombo Hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, an alleged drug trafficker who had been taken into custody by two police officers, had seized the injured officer’s service firearm before opening fire and fleeing the scene.
Police said the officers had intercepted the suspect, who was travelling on a motorcycle, following a tip-off.
After questioning him and placing him under arrest, one officer had gone to bring the suspect’s motorcycle while preparing to take him to the police station.
During that time, the suspect allegedly grabbed the other officer’s service weapon, shot him, and escaped on another motorcycle.
Police said the suspect has now been arrested in the Devolapola area of Minuwangoda, while further investigations are continuing.
