Sri Lanka to develop National Policy on Micro-Credentials with Commonwealth of Learning

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to formulate a National Policy and Framework on Micro-Credentials in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning, aimed at strengthening higher education and technical and vocational training systems in Sri Lanka.
According to the government, Micro-credentials are internationally recognized as an effective mechanism for promoting lifelong learning, enhancing workforce skills, and improving employability in response to rapid technological changes and evolving labour market demands.
Recognizing this, the government has identified the need to establish a national framework to ensure international comparability and recognition of Sri Lankan qualifications.
As such, a workshop will be held in Colombo in May 2026 to develop the Terms of Reference for the initiative.
The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Prime Minister, in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, to enter into an agreement with the Commonwealth of Learning.
The agreement will cover the development and implementation of the policy and framework, with the Commonwealth of Learning providing full financial support. (Newswire)
