Sri Lanka produces only 43% of its daily milk requirement: Deputy Minister

Sri Lanka currently produces only 43% of its daily milk requirement, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne told Parliament on Friday (24).

He said the Government has allocated Rs. 1,000 million in this year’s Budget to increase annual milk production from 410 million litres to 1,200 million litres.

An additional Rs. 1,000 million has been allocated to develop the Nikaweratiya Breeding Farm, which the Government plans to transform into a nucleus breeding centre for high-quality dairy cattle and buffalo.

Karunaratne said the Government is also implementing several initiatives to improve domestic milk production, including modernising livestock breeding farms, expanding the National Milk Production Programme and providing facilities to support local dairy farmers. (Newswire)
