Sri Lanka must Pursue Diplomatic Path to Reclaim Cultural Heritage – Acting FM

Acting Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra addressed the opening session of the “Whose Law?” research conference held in Colombo on May 13, highlighting the need for a policy-driven and evidence-based approach toward reclaiming Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage removed during the colonial era.
The conference brought together legal experts, historians, researchers, museum representatives, policymakers and international partners to discuss issues related to colonial-era cultural heritage, including legal and historical investigations and source-based research.
Addressing the gathering, Hemachandra said the conference represented an important platform where law, history, culture, justice and diplomacy intersect, rather than a purely political or diplomatic event.
He stressed that cultural artefacts removed during colonial periods should not be viewed merely as museum objects, but as living symbols of identity, heritage and historical memory belonging to nations and communities.
The Acting Minister also highlighted the importance of strengthening research, legal clarity, institutional coordination, public awareness and international cooperation to advance Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage interests. (Newswire)
