Sri Lanka has sufficient fuel stocks until August, says PM’s office

Sri Lanka has sufficient fuel stocks to meet demand until August, while requests have already been placed for fuel supplies required for the remaining months of the year, the Prime Minister’s (PM) Office said on Friday (15)

The update was provided during the sixth meeting chaired by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to review measures aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of public services amid the ongoing energy situation.

According to the PM’s Office, discussions focused on long-term energy management measures, fuel distribution and electricity conservation initiatives.

During the meeting, attention was also drawn to the possibility of replacing the current odd-even fuel distribution system with a QR code-based system in the future, while discussions were also held on increasing fuel quotas and introducing further fuel concessions.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya said Sri Lanka had managed the energy crisis without causing major inconvenience to the public, unlike in some other countries that experienced prolonged fuel shortages and power cuts.

However, she stressed that the crisis had not fully ended and continuous monitoring remained necessary.

The meeting also decided to appoint an “Energy Manager” for every government institution to promote energy conservation and encourage the use of renewable energy sources.

Officials additionally discussed plans to introduce Green Building concepts in government infrastructure projects under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.

The PM also instructed authorities to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply during the Vesak week. (Newswire)
