Skeletal remains of two children among latest finds at Chemmani mass grave

Excavations at the Chemmani Siththupaththi mass grave in Jaffna resumed on Tuesday (15) after a three-week suspension, with the remains of two more children among the latest discoveries.

Lawyer V.S. Niranjan, who is representing victims’ families, said two additional body accumulations were identified on the first day after excavations resumed, bringing the total number of body accumulations found at the site to 29.

According to officials involved in the excavation, 409 bodies have so far been exhumed, while a total of 414 human remains have been recovered during 87 days of excavations.

The Chemmani Siththupaththi mass grave has been excavated in three phases since May 15, 2025. Investigations are being led by archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva and Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Selliah Piranavan.

Excavation work, which was temporarily suspended on June 23 to allow the excavation team a break, resumed under the supervision of Jaffna Magistrate Selvanayagam Leninkumar. (Newswire)
