Police arrested two suspects within an hour of an armed robbery at a liquor shop near Anuradhapura Junction in Trincomalee last night (18).

According to police, the two men entered the shop around 9:45 pm and, by brandishing a T‑56 firearm, threatened employees before seizing cash and fleeing on a motorcycle. 

A telephone message alerted the Trincomalee Police Station to the incident.

Acting immediately, a team of officers tracked down the suspects at a temporary lodging in the Uppuweli Police Division and arrested them within about an hour.

Police confirmed that one of the suspects is a sergeant attached to the Uppuweli Police Station, serving at the ammunition store in Kilipunchimale. The suspects, aged 54 and 61, are residents of Hakmana.

Investigators recovered Rs. 11,500 in stolen cash, the motorcycle used in the crime, the T‑56 firearm, and a magazine containing 29 rounds.
