PM Harini highlights food security as key to national stability

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that food security, rooted in agriculture, is a crucial factor affecting a country’s stability, sovereignty, and national security.

Addressing the National Youth Agripreneur Showcase and B2B Connect Conference organized under the Smallholder Agribusiness Partnership Programme (SAPP) today (28), PM Amarasuriya highlighted the challenges facing agriculture in the current turbulent global environment.

The programme is jointly funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Sri Lanka, and aims to empower rural youth to engage in agribusiness ventures.

“You are playing an important role in both the agricultural sector and the national economy. Food security, founded on agriculture, directly impacts a nation’s national security. Concepts such as ‘Grow and Sell’ contribute significantly to strengthening the production economy,” she said, commending the organizers for successfully conducting the event despite national challenges.

PM Amarasuriya further noted that the COVID‑19 crisis and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have shown how vulnerable economies become when food security is lacking, with even minor decisions by leaders capable of disrupting supply chains.

The Prime Minister also warned that climate change poses serious threats to agriculture, making conditions unpredictable and jeopardizing production.

She stressed that the contributions of young agri‑entrepreneurs go beyond income generation, serving as a direct contribution to national food security and, by extension, national security.

PM Amarasuriya also expressed gratitude for the support extended by IFAD and SAPP, and conveyed best wishes to Sri Lanka’s creative entrepreneurial youth, whose talents and innovations she said are vital for the country’s future. (Newswire)
