New railway bridge to be built parallel to Peradeniya Black Bridge

A new bridge parallel to the Peradeniya Black Bridge (Kalu Palama) will be constructed for railway transportation, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake stated.

The Minister noted that the relevant plans and structural designs for the construction of the bridge are currently being prepared.

He made these remarks during a media briefing held after arriving at the Peradeniya Railway Station today (02) on a special train from Colombo Fort.

Train operations on the Upcountry Railway Line segment from Rambukkana to Peradeniya had come to a halt due to the recent disaster situation and were reopened for railway transportation after a period of ten months. Symbolizing its inaugural run, the Minister arrived at the Peradeniya Railway Station aboard the special train from Colombo Fort and shared these views following an inspection tour.

He further stated that construction work on the Peradeniya Black Bridge is currently progressing rapidly, and although work was delayed due to various reasons, necessary steps have been taken to complete it expeditiously.

Additionally, the Minister added that required measures have been initiated to develop the infrastructure of the Railway Department and railway transport services, as well as to provide necessary facilities for the railway staff. Pointing out that the entire railway staff is subjected to severe mental distress due to criticisms made by certain individuals on social media, the Minister noted that railway track construction work cannot proceed as quickly as some people criticize.
