The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will launch the first phase of the “Javelin Fiesta” National Talent Identification Programme in the Central Province on July 31, aiming to identify and develop future javelin throwers for Sri Lanka.

The programme, jointly organised by the Ministry and the Department of Sports Development, was announced at a media briefing attended by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.

As part of the event, the Minister presented a financial grant of Rs. 2.5 million to Sri Lankan international javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga, the programme’s brand ambassador, to support his training and future athletic development.

The talent hunt will identify athletes from schools, sports schools, athletic clubs and open applicants across eight categories: Under-16 boys and girls, Under-18 boys and girls, Under-20 men and women, and Open men and women.

A total of eight athletes will be selected from each category through physical literacy assessments and javelin-specific performance tests, forming a 64-member Central Province Javelin Squad.

The Ministry said the programme will later be expanded nationwide to identify and train athletes capable of representing Sri Lanka at international competitions. (Newswire)
