Govt to bring law against MP crossovers : Minister Nalinda Jayatissa

The Government expects to submit to Parliament a draft Bill seeking to cancel the parliamentary seats of MPs elected by the public who later defect to another political party, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking at today’s Cabinet decisions media briefing, Jayatissa said the proposed legislation is intended to address party crossovers by elected representatives.

The Minister made these remarks when he was questioned if the government is currently seeking the support of the opposition, especially in managing the current economic challenges.

Jayatissa also said the Government has no intention of recruiting opposition MPs into the ruling party, despite speculation and various reports suggesting otherwise.

While noting that some parties may anticipate such moves, he stressed that the Government was not making preparations to bring opposition members into its ranks and would instead act in line with the public mandate it had received. (Newswire)
