The Ministry of Science and Technology has launched the “V-Pramithi” national programme to improve the quality and safety of consumer goods sold in Sri Lanka.

The programme was launched at the Pettah Public Market as part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative and National Integrity Week.

As part of the inaugural inspection, officials collected random samples of products, including street food, coconut oil, toys, jaggery, treacle, cosmetics, spices and electrical appliances, for laboratory testing to assess their quality, composition and safety.

Science and Technology Minister Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena said the programme aims to ensure that food, beverages and other consumer products entering the market are free from harmful substances, including toxins and heavy metals.

The initiative, supported by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, Industrial Technology Institute and Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, will be carried out with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs Authority and Sri Lanka Police.

Authorities said the programme is intended to protect consumers, promote quality standards among manufacturers and traders, and prevent unsafe products from reaching the market. (Newswire)
