Govt ‘asleep’ over Rs. 800 million loss – Namal

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has alleged that more than Rs. 800 million has been lost due to financial irregularities, claiming that the President, Finance Ministry officials, and the Central Bank have failed to act.

Speaking to journalists in Horana, Rajapaksa said the amount involved “could increase further if converted at current exchange rates,” while questioning why no corrective action had been taken despite prior warnings reportedly given to the President by the Finance Minister in January.

“More than eighty crores have been stolen, but the President, the Finance Secretary, the Finance Ministry and the Central Bank are still sleeping,” he said, adding that the government had failed in its oversight responsibilities.

He also criticised what he described as a lack of accountability within state institutions, alleging that public confidence was weakening amid repeated incidents of financial misconduct across sectors.

Rajapaksa further accused the government of attempting to suppress political criticism, claiming that opposition voices were being compelled to answer allegations instead of those in power providing clear explanations.

Commenting on broader governance issues, he said the administration had failed to deliver on economic and infrastructure promises, including railway modernisation, while instead focusing on political rhetoric.

Rajaoaksa also referred to ongoing political debates on national security and sovereignty issues, insisting that separatism had no space in the country.

The MP made the remarks amid growing political exchanges between the government and opposition over economic management and institutional accountability. (Newswire)
