Government to hold anti-drug youth summit on June 26

The government plans to hold a national anti-drug youth summit on June 26 under the “A Nation United” programme aimed at combating drug abuse and narcotics trafficking.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), preliminary discussions on organising the summit were held on Thursday (21) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Presidential Secretary Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The summit, organised jointly by the National Youth Services Council and the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, will coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to the PMD, the programme aims to mobilise youth at grassroots level against drug abuse and demonstrate opposition to drug traffickers.

The PMD also stated that the issue has had a significant impact on the productivity of the country’s workforce. as survey reports show people between the ages of 20 and 35 are among the groups most affected by drug abuse, resulting in social, economic and health-related consequences.

Senior government officials, representatives of relevant institutions and members of the Tri-Forces and Police attended the discussion. (Newswire)
