Former Health Ministry Legal Officer arrested and remanded on corruption charges

A retired Chief Legal Officer of the Ministry of Health, Ahmad Riyas Ahmad, has been arrested on corruption charges and remanded until May 5, 2026.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption confirmed that its officers arrested the suspect on Tuesday (21) at around 3.45 pm, after investigating a complaint.

According to the Bribery Commission, while serving as a legal officer, Ahmad prepared three lease agreements to extend the rental period of the Medi House building leased to the Ministry of Health. 

He allegedly demanded Rs. 4,134,887 as preparation fees, accepted Rs. 2,000,000, and sought the balance.

From the remaining amount, he is accused of cashing a cheque worth Rs. 500,000 issued under the name Medi House Private Company from an account at the People’s Bank.

The suspect was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and ordered to be remanded until May 5. (Newswire)
