Education Ministry launches 55 hostel projects to benefit 16,000 university students

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has launched 55 new hostel projects across state universities islandwide, aiming to improve residential facilities for approximately 16,000 students.
The programme will be implemented in three phases and will include the construction of new hostels at 13 universities and other higher education institutions.
The largest allocations have been made to the University of Sabaragamuwa and Rajarata University, each receiving seven hostel projects that will provide accommodation for 2,200 students. The South Eastern University will receive six hostels for 2,000 students, while the Eastern University and Uva Wellassa University will receive facilities accommodating 1,600 and 1,800 students, respectively.
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the University of Vavuniya, and Wayamba University are among the institutions set to receive new hostel facilities, while projects are also planned for the University of Jaffna, the University of Moratuwa, the University of Ruhuna, Gampaha Wickramarachchi University, and the Trincomalee Campus.
Most projects are currently at the tendering, evaluation or procurement stage, while preliminary construction activities have already commenced at selected sites, including the University of Ruhuna. (Newswire)
