‘Easy payment’ housing scheme scam: Company director arrested

A director of a private company has been arrested by the Mirihana Special Crimes Investigation Unit for allegedly defrauding members of the public by promising houses and land under an easy payment scheme.

The suspect, a 48-year-old resident of Negombo, allegedly promoted the scheme through advertisements on social media, promising to provide houses and land on instalment plans.

Investigations revealed that customers who responded to the advertisements were made to sign agreements and pay an advance amount equivalent to 60% of the total value of the house and land. However, the suspect allegedly failed to construct the promised houses, while cheques issued to customers seeking refunds had also been dishonoured.

Police said five complaints have so far been lodged with the Mirihana Special Crimes Investigation Unit, adding that more victims are expected to come forward.

The suspect was produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today (28) and remanded until Aug. 4.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Mirihana Special Crimes Investigation Unit. (Newswire)
