Dilum says remarks were not aimed at child, apologises over controversy

Sarvajana Balaya National Organizer and former Minister Dilum Amunugama says his controversial remarks that triggered a social media backlash were not directed at the 15-year-old child linked to the case, while also expressing regret and apologising over the misunderstanding.

Amunugama came under criticism after stating at a media briefing that, according to information received by his party, the arrest and detention of an Atamasthanadhipathi Thera had been based on a statement made by a sex worker.

The remarks sparked outrage online, with many social media users questioning how such language could be used in a case reportedly involving a minor.

Responding to the criticism, Amunugama said his comments had been misrepresented and circulated on social media in a distorted manner.

He said the statement was made in reference to information he had received regarding a separate incident in the Nittambuwa area and not about the child connected to the case.

“If that statement caused hurt to the child, the child’s family or anyone in society due to a misunderstanding, I express my regret and apologise,” he said.

Amunugama also maintained that he had no intention of insulting anyone and stressed that throughout nearly two decades in politics he had not engaged in mudslinging or personal attacks. (Newswire)
