The general secretary of ruling Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has dismissed reports of an internal faction working against Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, describing the claims as a “ridiculous joke” manufactured by political opponents.

Speaking to the state newspaper Silumina, Tilvin Silva rejected allegations that a faction based out of the JVP’s headquarters in Pelawatte was attempting to undermine the Prime Minister.

“It is actually very advantageous for us that the opposition behaves like this,” Mr. Silva said. “Relying on baseless fabrications that no one believes only works to their own disadvantage. Even in ten years’ time, that reality will not change.”

Speculation had mounted in local political circles regarding potential friction between the traditional, Marxist-leaning JVP core—headquartered in Pelawatte—and the broader National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, which includes civil society figures and academics such as Dr. Amarasuriya.

However, Mr. Silva pushed back strongly against suggestions that the two entities could be divided.

“You cannot really separate the JVP and the NPP. We are not in a position where a line can be drawn to divide us like a rainbow,” he said, describing the relationship between party leaders, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Dr. Amarasuriya, as built on deep mutual affection and trust.

Taking aim at the nature of the allegations, Mr. Silva noted that opposition narratives had reached extreme levels, citing previous conspiracy theories that claimed he and President Dissanayake were planning to poison the Prime Minister.

“Our opponents judge the NPP through the lens of their own fractured parties,” Mr. Silva added. “If we operated like them, we would never have made it this far.”
