China has agreed to provide technical and research support for a proposal to establish bamboo “bio-fences” as a sustainable solution to Sri Lanka’s long-standing human-elephant conflict.

The proposal was discussed during an official visit to the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) in Beijing by a Sri Lankan delegation led by Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody.

During talks with ICBR officials, the delegation explored bamboo cultivation, modern processing technologies and bamboo-based industrial products.

Sri Lanka requested China’s assistance to develop bamboo bio-fences to help reduce human-elephant conflict. In response, the Chinese side pledged support through research and development, modern technology and best practices.

According to the Environment Ministry, the initiative is expected not only to provide an environmentally friendly approach to mitigating human-elephant conflict but also to create new economic opportunities for local communities through bamboo-based industries.

The Government said the project could contribute to Sri Lanka’s broader green development goals while addressing one of the country’s most persistent wildlife conservation challenges. (Newswire)
