CBK speaks at French National Day commemoration in Buis-les-Baronnies

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga attended a French National Day commemoration in Buis-les-Baronnies, southeastern France, as its chief guest on July 14.

In a Facebook post, Kumaratunga said she was invited by the local mayor while visiting friends in the village.

Addressing the event, the former President said she admired the French Revolution’s vision of liberty, equality and fraternity, as well as France’s commitment to democratic governance.

She said these values had influenced her decision to pursue university studies in France, adding that her time there taught her to govern with respect for democracy and freedom.

Kumaratunga also spoke about the damaging effects of climate change in France and across the world.

“At this moment when the world is undergoing radical change, where structures of governance and social and cultural values are under threat, we need leaders with a broad vision who can bring nations and peoples, big or small, together and lead us towards progress and peace,” she said. (Newswire)
