Bank officer remanded for allegedly helping Gnanasara Thera evade arrest

A bank officer accused of helping Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera evade arrest while warrants had been issued against him by three courts has been remanded until October 9.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after the bank officer, a resident of the Kelaniya area, was arrested and produced before court by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

The CCD told court that the suspect had allegedly transported Gnanasara Thera in his vehicle from Rajagiriya to the Elpitiya area despite being aware that warrants had been issued for the monk’s arrest.

Police said the suspect was arrested over allegations of aiding Gnanasara Thera to evade arrest and failing to comply with court orders, with offences being investigated under the Penal Code.

The CCD requested that the suspect be remanded, informing court that investigations into the incident had not yet been completed.

After considering the submissions, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded until October 9. (Newswire)
