Showers above 50mm are expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today (30), while mainly dry weather will prevail over the other areas of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, North-central, North-western and Central provinces and in the Ratnapura, Monaragala, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. 

Meanwhile, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kalpitiya to Mullaitivu via Mannar and Kankasanthurai. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaitivu to Trincomalee and from Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Galle.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kalpitiya to Mullaitivu via Mannar and Kankasanthurai will be rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Mullaitivu to Trincomalee and from Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Galle will be fairly rough at times.

The wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. (Newswire)
