The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division following intense rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas.

The department’s Hydrology and Disaster Management Division warned that heavy rainfall over the past several hours has created a significant risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

Residents living near the river have been urged to remain on high alert, closely monitor water levels and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.

Motorists travelling through affected areas have also been advised to exercise extreme caution.

The department said relevant disaster management authorities and emergency response units have been notified and requested to take necessary measures to ensure public safety.

The warning, issued at 8 a.m. on September 20, remains valid until 8 a.m. on 21st. (Newswire)
