A Sri Lankan father and son have been rescued off the coast of Bangladesh after spending 36 days adrift at sea following an engine failure, Bangladesh’s Prothom Alo reported.

The fishermen, identified as S.H. Chaminda and his son Saunda Hannadigipiyawating from Devinuwara, were rescued by local fishermen off Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

According to Prothom Alo, their food supplies ran out seven days after they set out to sea, forcing them to survive for the next 29 days on fishing bait and raw fish they caught from the sea.

Four fishermen had originally set out from Sri Lanka. After their boat’s engine failed during bad weather, two fishermen reportedly returned to the Sri Lankan coast with the assistance of another vessel three days later. The father and son remained aboard as it was their own boat.

The report said that seven or eight days later, a group of people from Myanmar allegedly boarded the drifting vessel and took several valuables, including binoculars and a camera.

Bangladeshi fishermen later spotted the vessel and found the two men inside, with one reportedly in poor physical condition. They rescued the pair and towed their disabled boat ashore.

Prothom Alo reported that the father and son were subsequently taken into the custody of Maheshkhali Police while authorities carry out the necessary legal procedures.

The two Sri Lankans have reportedly requested assistance to return home as soon as possible. (Newswire)
