Rs. 1.34 billion allocated for rural road development in Kalutara District

A major road development programme valued at Rs. 1.34 billion will be launched in the Kalutara District under the Second Integrated Road Investment Programme (iRoad), with 14 rural and regional roads set to be upgraded using carpet surfacing.
The programme, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Sri Lanka, is aimed at improving rural connectivity, widening roads, upgrading drainage systems and rehabilitating culverts.
The inaugural phase of the project will commence on Friday (13) under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who is also a Member of Parliament for the Kalutara District.
The first stage will see development work begin on four roads located in the Agalawatta, Matugama and Bandaragama Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The programme will be implemented under two project packages, Lot 03 and Lot 04.
Under Lot 03, seven roads in the Kalutara District and five roads in the Colombo District will be upgraded, covering a total distance of 20 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs. 692 million. The roads are scheduled for completion by June 5, 2027.
Under Lot 04, seven roads in the Matugama, Madurawala, Agalawatta, Bulathsinhala and Palindanuwara Divisional Secretariat divisions will be developed over a total distance of 19.5 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs. 648.1 million. These projects are also expected to be completed by June 5, 2027.
The iRoad programme includes carpet surfacing, road widening, drainage improvements, culvert rehabilitation and a maintenance component under which the roads will be maintained for a specified period after construction. (Newswire)
