Adverse weather affects over 1,100 people across six districts

A total of 1,192 individuals from 6,907 families across six districts have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The DMC said one person had died after a 64-year-old man in Gampaha was swept away by floodwaters.

Authorities reported two houses had been completely destroyed, while 807 houses sustained partial damage due to the severe weather.

A total of 351 families have been relocated to 17 safety shelters established in affected areas.

Minor flood warnings issued for the downstream areas of the Kalu River Basin and the Attanagalu Oya Basin remain in effect.

Meanwhile, several road closures and railway disruptions have also been reported across the country.

Authorities stated that roads damaged by Cyclone Ditwah in the Riverston area of the Matale District have now been reopened only for light vehicle movement.

In the Kandy District, the road from Kandy to Talatuoya has been closed after the Udadelthota Bridge subsided. The Provincial Road Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Army’s Kandy District Unit are currently working to install a temporary bridge. Motorists have been advised to use the alternative route via Galaha town through Ambalamana and the Belwood Junction.

Train services on the Mannar railway line have also been suspended between Mannar and Medawachchiya due to an obstruction on the track.

Meanwhile, operations on the Up-country railway line have been disrupted between Rambukkana and Ihalakotte, with train services currently operating only from Ihalakotte to Badulla. (Newswire)
