Low-pressure area : Above 100 mm of rain expected in several areas today

The low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist in the sea area in the vicinity of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The current rainy conditions in Sri Lanka are expected to continue for the next few days due to the influence of this system.
As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in most parts of the island, while cloudy skies are expected.
Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Northwestern and Northern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, wind speed can increase over the sea areas around Sri Lanka during the coming days due to the influence of the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island. Winds will be west or variable in direction. Wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Galle to Hambantota via Matara will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be moderate.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
