SLCERT issues warning over WhatsApp nude video scam

Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) have warned the public about a new WhatsApp-based scam involving explicit video calls and blackmail, urging users to remain vigilant.
According to Sri Lanka CERT, scammers first gain access to victims’ social media networks through fake accounts, often targeting contacts listed on Facebook.
Victims are then contacted via WhatsApp through a video call, typically featuring a naked woman. During the call, the scammers record the interaction, capturing the victim’s face.
The recorded footage is later used to threaten victims, with fraudsters demanding money and warning that the video will be shared on social media if payment is not made.
Authorities said victims are often instructed to transfer money to foreign bank accounts.
Sri Lanka CERT advised the public not to engage with unknown video calls and to report such incidents immediately.
Those affected can contact Sri Lanka CERT via hotline 101 or email (report@cert.gov.lk) or lodge a complaint with the nearest police station. (Newswire)
