Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has endorsed the certificate on the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution Bill after it was passed by Parliament with the required special majority.

With the Speaker’s endorsement, the legislation comes into force as the Twenty-Second Amendment to the Constitution.

The amendment increases the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 years and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65 years.

It also increases the number of Court of Appeal judges from 19 to 24, paving the way for regional Courts of Appeal aimed at speeding up the disposal of cases and reducing the need for litigants to travel to Colombo.

The Speaker also endorsed the Judicature (Amendment) Bill, which increases the retirement age of High Court judges from 61 to 63 and that of District judges and magistrates from 60 to 62.

The legislation also increases the maximum number of High Court judges from 110 to 120, allowing additional Provincial High Courts and Provincial Civil Appellate High Courts to be established.

The legislation will come into force as the Judicature (Amendment) Act, No. 23 of 2026. (Newswire)
