Weather: Low-Pressure area in South Bay of Bengal brings more showers

A low-pressure area has formed over the central parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka, influencing weather conditions across the island, the Department of Meteorology said.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in sea areas off the coast from Hambantota to Trincomalee via Batticaloa during the next 24 hours.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Showery conditions are expected to intensify over the next few days in the Northern, North Central, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North Central, Central, Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Hambantota District. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some areas of the Central, Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa District.

Elsewhere, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places after 1 p.m., with fairly heavy showers of about 75 mm likely in some locations.

Misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.

Winds will be north-easterly at speeds of 30 to 40 kph, increasing up to 50 kph at times in sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Meanwhile, sea areas off these coasts will be rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers.

The public has been advised to take precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. (Newswire)
