Two women were killed and several others injured in a road accident on the Southern Expressway on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the accident occurred near the 175th kilometer post in the Angunakolapelessa area, when a van traveling from Mattala toward Colombo overturned after one of its tires burst, causing the driver to lose control.

Six people were in the van at the time of the incident. The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident.
