Triangular T20 Tournament to Finalise T20 Squad for Zimbabwe & Asia Cup

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will conduct an Domestic T20 triangular tournament starting August 7, following the postponement of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) that was initially scheduled for this month.

With the LPL pushed back and no international fixtures until the Zimbabwe tour later in August, SLC has seized the opportunity to organize a competitive series aimed at fine-tuning the national T20 squad. The tournament comes on the back of Sri Lanka’s 2-1 T20I series defeat to Bangladesh, which exposed vulnerabilities in the middle order—especially at No. 4 and No. 6—and highlighted inconsistency in fielding.

“To prepare for the Zimbabwe tour, we’re organising a triangular T20 series featuring three teams. We have several players in contention for key roles, and this will help us assess who’s in form,” said Chief Selector Upul Tharanga.

The selectors will name three squads drawn from national and ‘A’ team players, with each team playing four round-robin matches. The top two sides will meet in a final. The tournament will serve as the main trial to pick the T20I squad for the Zimbabwe series scheduled for the final week of August and Asia Cup in September.

Ahead of the series, SLC has invited renowned power-hitting coach Julian Wood to conduct a special training program for 25 shortlisted players from July 30 to August 5. (Newswire)
