SJB MP Jagath Vithana delivered an emotional speech in Parliament, expressing anguish over the recent arrest of his son in connection with a vehicle sold by the daughter of MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena.
Vithana said the vehicle, purchased in good faith and registered under his company, had been driven by his son when Police stopped and arrested him without prior notice. “I’ve driven to Parliament in that same vehicle at least ten times. If I had known of any issue, if I had been informed about such an issue, I would have handed it over or made a statement,” he said.
He added that MP Abeygunawardena acknowledged the vehicle had been sold by his daughter but claimed no knowledge of the issue.
Despite proper registration, Vithana’s son remains in remand for 14 days, with bail denied.
“My son has refused special treatment. He has refused meals from outside. He has two young children who are asking for their father. I asked them to arrest me instead, but they arrested my son. I know, I will not face justice, I might lose the vehicle and money. But this injustice must not happen to an average citizen,” the MP said.
Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih advised MP Jagath Vithana to refrain from commenting further, noting that the case is currently before the courts.
In response, Vithana said, “I have no other platform to speak about this.” He also criticized remarks made by a government spokesperson, suggesting that he and MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena were “scratching each other’s backs.” Vithana condemned such public statements, urging fellow MPs to show empathy and avoid making judgments before the legal process is complete.
