A new chapter in healthcare development in Negombo began as St. Joseph Hospital officially broke ground on a state of the art Operating Theatre Complex, a project expected to strengthen surgical services in the region and contribute to the advancement of Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Negombo, members of the Municipal Council, religious leaders and members of the medical fraternity, reflecting strong support from civic, spiritual and healthcare communities.

Once completed, the new complex will house three operating theatres built to international standards, supported by modern surgical technology and advanced infection control systems designed to ensure high levels of patient safety and precision.

The development will also include dedicated intensive care units for neonatal and adult patients, specialised obstetric delivery rooms with a purpose built theatre for childbirth, and more than 45 patient rooms, including premium suites aimed at improving patient comfort, privacy and overall care experience.

Hospital officials say the expansion will significantly enhance clinical capacity in Negombo, reducing the need for patients to travel to Colombo or overseas for specialised surgical treatment.

Beyond healthcare benefits, the project is also expected to contribute to the local economy by engaging construction, engineering and allied service sectors, while creating long term employment opportunities for surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, technicians and support staff.

St. Joseph Hospital is managed and operated by the Kids & Teens Pediatric Medical Group in the United States, bringing international clinical standards, governance and expertise to Sri Lanka’s healthcare landscape while maintaining a strong focus on community based care.
