Sri Lankan SC Judge moves Indian Court to remove Old News Reports

A judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has approached the Karnataka High Court in India seeking the removal of links to old online news reports about him from Google, according to a report by The Hindu.

The report said Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz had filed a petition requesting the court to direct Google India to remove links to alleged defamatory news articles published in 2015 and 2020 by Sri Lankan news websites Colombo Telegraph and LankaNews.

Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum of the Karnataka High Court issued notices to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Google and adjourned further hearing of the case until March 16.

The petition reportedly states that although cases related to the alleged controversies were later quashed by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, the news reports remain accessible online through Google search results, which the judge claims continues to harm his professional reputation.

According to The Hindu, Justice Nawaz said he filed the case in India as Google India’s headquarters are located in Bengaluru and also cited the “right to be forgotten” principle in seeking the removal of outdated content from the internet. (Newswire)
