Sri Lanka thanks Bangladesh for release of six detained fishermen

Six Sri Lankan fishermen who had been detained in Bangladesh since July 2025 have been released and safely repatriated to Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The fishermen, who were on board the Sri Lankan fishing vessel IMUL-A-0138-PTM (SLFV Sudu Duwa-4), had been apprehended by Bangladesh authorities last year.

The six fishermen arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake at 5:10 a.m. on April 2, 2026, on FitsAir flight 8D912.

The Ministry said the release was facilitated by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Dhaka through diplomatic engagement, with the cooperation of Bangladesh authorities, as a gesture of humanitarian goodwill and longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.

The repatriation was coordinated through the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and the Sri Lankan High Commission in Dhaka.

Sri Lanka also expressed appreciation to Bangladesh authorities for their cooperation in facilitating the release and safe return of the fishermen. (Newswire)
