SC jails ex-Immigration Chief Harsha Illukpitiya for two years
The Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced former Controller General of Immigration and Emigration Harsha Illukpitiya to two years’ imprisonment for contempt of court after he disregarded an interim order relating to the suspension of Sri Lanka’s e-visa process.
The case stems from controversy surrounding the government’s deal with VFS Global to manage the country’s online visa system. The Supreme Court had earlier issued an interim order halting the implementation of the new e-visa process amid mounting criticism and legal challenges.
