Sasakawa Memorial Trust Holds 34th AGM

The 34th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sasakawa Memorial Trust was held recently at the Sasakawa Centre Auditorium, with Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Isomata Akio attending as chief guest.

The event commenced with the traditional oil lamp lighting ceremony, followed by the national anthems of Sri Lanka and Japan.

The meeting included the adoption of the previous year’s minutes, the annual report for 2024/2025, and the audited financial statements for 2024. Jayasinghe & Co. was reappointed as auditors for 2025.

In his address, Sasakawa Trust Chairman Premalal Fernando acknowledged the contributions of trustees and members of the three constituent associations: the Lanka Japan Friendship Society (LJFS), the JICA Alumni Association (JICA AA), and the Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA).

Fernando also provided updates on the New Sasakawa Building Project at No. 85, Ward Place, Colombo 7. The 10-storey office building, funded by a grant of approximately LKR 4.2 billion from Japan’s Nippon Foundation, is expected to open in March 2026.

The final tranche of LKR 375 million is anticipated in September 2025. Each floor will offer about 4,200 square feet of leasable space, with a marketing campaign planned to attract Japanese institutions and other tenants.

The chairman expressed gratitude to the consultants and contractors for maintaining the project timeline.

Ambassador Isomata commended the trustees and chairman for their dedication, noting the future building’s significance as a central hub for Japanese engagement in Sri Lanka.

He also thanked the constituent associations for their continued support and acknowledged the efforts of the Japanese Language Education Association Trust (JLEA Trust), which provides instruction to around 800 students annually and administers the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
