Sajith at PUCSL: Don’t pass coal losses onto consumers

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged authorities not to pass on losses caused by the use of substandard coal at the Norochcholai power plant to electricity consumers.
Speaking at a Public Utilities Commission meeting held at the BMICH to gather public views on proposed electricity tariff revisions, Premadasa said the use of low-quality coal had triggered a serious crisis in power generation.
He said power generation losses were recorded as 51 MW on March 12, 130 MW on March 13, 135 MW on March 14, 132 MW on March 15, 148 MW on March 16, and 165 MW on the following day.
Premadasa warned that turning to diesel power generation to bridge this gap would increase costs, and said such additional expenses should not be transferred to consumers.
He also called for accountability, stating that losses arising from substandard coal should be recovered from suppliers and testing agencies. He noted that the Public Utilities Commission has the authority under the Electricity Act to enforce such measures.
The Opposition Leader further highlighted concerns over upcoming fuel supply agreements, questioning whether all 36 scheduled coal shipments could be delivered on time. He warned that any delays could further increase reliance on costly diesel power.
Premadasa also raised concerns over a lack of transparency in the procurement of naphtha and furnace oil, alleging that excessive payments may be made without proper oversight.
He cautioned that the proposed electricity tariff structure could disproportionately impact ordinary consumers, including households, religious institutions, and small businesses, while benefiting higher-income groups.
Calling for a fair and balanced approach, Premadasa said there should be affordability and equity in electricity pricing.
He also said renewable energy development should move beyond policy statements and be implemented practically, noting that solar power remains more cost-effective compared to fuel-based power generation.
Premadasa further warned of potential future power cuts if proper planning and cost management are not ensured. (Newswire)
