President oversees ongoing rescue of Kala Oya Bus Passengers

20 passengers in the bus that was caught in a flash flood in Rajanganaya have been safely rescued, while operations to rescue the remaining passengers are still underway, the Navy Spokesperson said.

A group of passengers from the bus that was swept by strong currents over the Kala Oya bridge on the Anuradhapura–Puttalam road are currently sheltering on the roof of a nearby house after last night’s rescue attempt failed due to severe weather conditions.

According to officials, the Sri Lanka Navy has launched a fresh operation this morning to safely evacuate all those still stranded. Additional personnel from the Navy’s Rapid Action Boat Squadron, Special Boat Squadron and other specialised units have been deployed to support the effort.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is monitoring the live rescue operation, with video footage from early this morning showing him observing the situation closely as naval teams work amid challenging weather.

Rescue work is continuing under difficult conditions, with rising water levels and fast currents complicating access to the stranded group. Authorities said every effort is being made to bring all remaining passengers to safety. (Newswire)
