Sri Lanka Police have denied allegations circulating on social media that officers acted in retaliation after a hotel in Pelawatte reportedly stopped providing them with free food.
The viral video relates to a visit by the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Nugegoda to a hotel on Pannipitiya Road, Pelawatte, on July 25, 2025. The visit was part of an investigation into a complaint made by a hotel employee over the theft of cash and gold jewelry.
Social media posts alleged that police officers had previously received free meals from the hotel and that, after the practice was discontinued following complaints, officers targeted the hotel out of anger.
Police have rejected these claims, stating that the visit was strictly in response to a formal complaint and that standard procedures were followed during the site inspection. CCTV footage showing individuals smoking near the hotel and officers questioning the owner has been misinterpreted and shared with misleading commentary, police said.
Authorities emphasized that any allegations of misconduct by police officers should be reported through formal channels and assured that the law will be applied equally, regardless of rank. (Newswire)
