Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage marks 51 years with new sanctuary

The Department of National Zoological Gardens marked the 51st anniversary of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, highlighting its role in Asian elephant conservation and announcing the launch of a new welfare-focused facility.

Established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the orphanage began with five rescued calves—Kumari, Nila, Kadira, Vijaya, and Mathali—and has since grown into one of the country’s most prominent conservation institutions.

Officials said the orphanage has recorded 76 natural births since its first successful calf, Sukumali, was born in 1984. The facility also marked a milestone in 2021 with its first-ever twin elephant birth. The orphanage currently cares for 65 elephants, including 27 males and 38 females.

To commemorate the anniversary, a “Free Elephant Sanctuary,” locally known as Nidahas Ali Arana, will be inaugurated by Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi, in line with the orphanage’s 51st anniversary.

The sanctuary is designed to manage adult male elephants during musth, allowing them greater freedom within a secure and scientifically managed environment.

Officials said the initiative reflects modern zoological and animal welfare standards and aims to reduce stress while improving safety for both animals and caretakers.

The Department of National Zoological Gardens said maintaining a managed population of 50 to 80 elephants is a key conservation objective, ensuring the species’ survival and potential reintroduction if wild populations decline. The orphanage also contributes to research, education, and tourism, generating significant economic benefits.

Future plans include expanding educational programs, improving staff welfare, and adopting advanced technologies for elephant care and scientific management. (NewsWire)
