New court decision on case against NPP Ministers
The Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court today rejected a request made by the lawyer representing the complainant to arrest Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe, and Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal over an alleged fraudulent lease of a building in Dehiwala belonging to the National Workers’ Institute.
Magistrate Pasan Amarasekera ruled that although a complaint had been filed claiming a forged lease agreement was used to rent the two-storied property for Rs. 3 million, the evidence presented so far did not establish sufficient grounds of a criminal offence. The court noted that the case file had already been referred to the Attorney General in February for advice.
The suspects had previously given statements to the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau in August following earlier court orders. Samarasinghe has stated that the lease was approved by the executive committee of the National Workers’ Congress in 2020.
The case will be taken up again on February 27, 2026. (Newswire)
