Namal Rajapaksa questions CEB restructuring plan

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa has raised concerns over the proposed restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), warning that dismantling the institution without a clear transition plan could create uncertainty and undermine governance.
Sharing a post on X, Rajapaksa said the country’s energy sector must evolve to achieve 70% renewable energy and provide long-term tariff relief, but argued that replacing the 56-year-old CEB with six state-owned companies without a clear strategy would not amount to meaningful reform.
He stated moving ahead with restructuring while the matter remains under review by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka could leave about 22,000 employees in uncertainty and raise serious concerns about accountability and governance.
He also stated dividing what he described as a strategic national asset while instructing employees not to support the entities they serve would create administrative confusion.
Electricity supply is critical to economic recovery, industrial growth and national security, he said, adding that any reforms must strengthen institutions, ensure supply stability and protect workers, investors and consumers.
He called for a credible national energy strategy that balances sustainability, affordability and security rather than “rushed experiments” that could undermine public trust. (NewsWire)
