Minister warns bus owners of permit cancellation over staff drug use

Minister Bimal Rathnayake warned bus owners that their route permits will be cancelled if drivers or conductors are found using illegal drugs.

Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development said authorities would hold owners accountable, rejecting claims that drug use by staff could occur without their knowledge. He made the remarks while attending a meeting at the Matara District Secretariat.

“Bus owners know whether their drivers or conductors use drugs,” he said, urging owners not to allow such practices. “If they do, the route permit can be revoked.”

He said owners should act responsibly by employing staff who are not addicted to drugs, warning that failure to do so could result in the loss of their businesses. Minister also added that there are many capable young drivers available in rural areas to fill vacancies. (NewsWire)
