The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued updated landslide evacuation notices, with a Level 3 (Red) alert in effect until 8:30 a.m. on February 23, 2026.
The highest alert level indicates that rainfall in affected areas has exceeded 150 millimeters within 24 hours, and residents are urged to evacuate immediately to avoid the risk of landslides, slope failures, and rock falls.
Red alerts have been declared for the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas:
• Kandy District: Yatinuwara, Doluwa, Ududumbara, Ganga Ihala Korale
• Kegalle District: Yatiyanthota, Kegalle, Dehiowita, Aranayaka, Mawanella
• Matale District: Rattota, Ambanganga Korale, Laggala Pallegama, Wilgamuwa, Ukuwela
• Ratnapura District: Ratnapura
Several other areas in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Moneragala, and Ratnapura remain under Level 2 (Amber) or Level 1 (Yellow) warnings as heavy rains continue.
The NBRO has advised residents to pay special attention to steep slopes, valleys, and man-made cut slopes, and to follow instructions from local authorities for all landslide-prone areas. Authorities have emphasised that evacuation to safer locations is critical in red alert zones. (NewsWire)
